The 2021-22 ski and snowboard season has gotten off to a rocky start, with only the highest-elevation slopes open and all others waiting impatiently for more snowfall and colder temps.

Mother Nature has begun to smile upon on the West, particularly the northern and central Rockies where significant amounts fell on resorts from Alberta to southern Colorado.

As summer fades to fall, skiers and snowboarders across North America are chomping at the bit to strap on the boards when Colorado’s Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Ski Area, Vermont’s Killington Resort and Maine’s Sunday River prepare for the annual #racetoopen for the 2018-19 season.

Ski resorts throughout the Northeast are wondering just what did they do to get onto the naughty list? Was it all that snow last season? The cold temperatures too? Maybe we should just blame it on El Niño?

This could be the big one. No, really, it could be the mother of all Thanksgiving snowstorms. So hold the turkey. Hold the cranberry sauce. Hold the stuffing, and leave early - especially if you’re driving I-70 or I-80 - get a room and don’t forget the fat skis!

Despite all the media hype over Storm Juno, there are some very happy skiers and riders heading to the hills in the Northeast in its wake.

More snow moving into Colorado Sunday, Tahoe next week.

A warm up across the country this week and then maybe back to more snow next week.

Powder days are rolling right into April as a series of storms hit California, Utah and Colorado. 

Stormy weather returns to the Western U.S. late next week and the East stays cold.

Colorado: A few inches likely on Saturday and Saturday night. Northern Colorado might see light snow again next Monday. Then a stronger storm next Thursday or Friday.

Tahoe: Snow returns on Wednesday the 26th with multiple storms through the end of March.

Utah: Snow returns on Thursday the 27th with multiple storms through the end of March.

Northwest: A few more inches Saturday night, then snow returns late next week with multiple storms through the end of March.

New England: Another 3-6 inches on Saturday. Very cold early next week, with a storm possible next Wednesday or Thursday.

Colorado: Snow will fall Friday night through Sunday. The deepest accumulations will be in the southern and central mountains (south of I-70), though all mountains will see snow. Saturday is a storm day and Sunday is a pow day.

Tahoe: Another 6-12 inches on through Friday night on top of the 6-12+ that's already fallen. If you missed Friday’s snow, go get some on Saturday morning.

Utah: Enjoy the new snow Friday, and again on Saturday!

Northwest: Light snow and chilly this weekend, then stronger storms next week with rising snow levels.

New England: Light snow and chilly this weekend. Then a strong storm on Monday for southern New England and the Mid Atlantic.

Multiple storms will hit the west Wednesday through the weekend with Powder Days in Colorado and Utah.

Here is a quick look:

Colorado: Snow likely Thursday and Thursday night, then a stronger storm Friday night through Saturday night focused on the southern half of the state. Powder days: Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Tahoe: Two storms this week with snow down to lake level. Best powder days on Thursday, then Friday afternoon and/or Saturday morning.

Utah: Two storms with mountain snow and valley rain. Best powder on Thursday and Saturday, maybe Sunday morning as well.

Northwest: Mostly dry this week, with a better chance for heavy snow late this weekend or next week. Very cold air arrives this weekend.

New England: Consistently cold but no major snow storms on the horizon.

Early March should bring much-needed snow relief for California and Oregon. The snowpack in this area is only 30-40% of average, but multiple storms should dump above average precipitation late next week through the first week of March.
