The days are getting longer, it's daylight savings time and the snow is softening: Spring is on the way, and that means it's festival time at ski resorts all across SnoCountry.
Most resorts do something wacky for spring – from pond-skimming to music on the slopes to costume contests and plenty of beer. Here's a sampling of what's out there in various regions of the US.
At Pajarito and Sipapu, the two sister resorts in New Mexico go at a spring fling in different ways but with the same small-mountain, hometown vibe. Sitting just above Los Alamos, Pajarito's first SkiFiesta was 1948. This season, on March 16, there's plenty of local beers and wines, costume contest and live “bluegrass rock” at the base. “Sipapu Lake” awaits skimming, the slopes groomed for the Cardboard Derby and Happy Hops scavenger hunt on March 16.
Southern Vermont's Mt. Snow ignites spring with the return of the Bud Light Reggaefest on March 22-24. Music in Snow Barn and base area, pond skimming and the off-beat Duct Tape Derby that pits conveyances made of cardboard, duct tape, zip ties and paint on the tubing hill.
Boyne Mountain goes full-on into a “crazy daze” March 15-17. There's hours of live music, costume competitions and an on-hill party at the Victor Warming Hut. Down at the base of the Michigan resort, the partying never stops with the BBQ's smokin', bands poundin' and the Last Man Standing Brunch & Bloody Mary Bar. The weekend finishes with Slush Cup pond skimming.
Park City Mountain sets aside the last two weeks for the annual Spring Grüv. If you want music, the Utah resort has it – all over the mountain, during the day and aprés-ski. Sprinkled amidst the sounds are meet 'n' greet with avalanche dogs, pond skimming, trivia contest and lots of s'mores. Carpooling is strongly suggested.
Lots happening on the slopes of Aspen Mountain during the Bud Light Spring Jam, March 15-24. There's big-air exhibitions by top regional freestylers, entry-level terrain park instruction and bumps challenged at neighboring Aspen Highlands. Music resounds with three free concerts during the week.
