SnoCountry SnoCast: Active Weather Pattern Into November

Utah's Snowbird shows off the changing of seasons. Snow is in the forecast almost every day through this weekend at Snowbird due to an active weather pattern out west. (Snowbird)

We’re turning the calendar to November in this SnoCountry SnoCast, and with that comes more signals that winter is coming. A weather pattern featuring frequent storm systems will impact both the western and eastern areas this week.

Eastern U.S. & Canada

After the first nor'easter of the season last week, we’ll have to perfect our snow dance in the east this week. An active pattern sets up in the East with several systems working through, but the only thing missing is *cold air*. Several storm systems will move in from the south central part of the U.S. and eject northeastward Friday (Nov. 2), again Saturday (Nov. 3), and again around Tuesday-Wednesday (Nov. 6-7).  If this were January, we’d be in for a snowy week…but given relatively mild temperatures, we’ll have to hope for a similar pattern when more cold air is settled in. The good news? There may be a brief window of colder air wrapped in behind the storm Sunday for some light snow across the far northern New England and New York's Adirondack Mountain peaks as temperatures dip overnight. Watch for snowflakes around Whiteface, Jay Peak and Sugarloaf

Western U.S. & Canada

All the systems being spewed into the northeast will originate out west and, luckily, there is some cold air in place for much of the Rockies. Like the East, the western U.S. will see several storm systems develop this week. The general track slides them down the Rockies from Canada. Most of the elevated, colder, locations will add up the snow as each system cruises through. Expect healthy totals anywhere from 6-12” over the course of the week across the higher peaks of the Rockies from the British Columbia/Alberta border, stretching southeastward right down the Rockies to northern New Mexico. Some locally higher totals over 2 feet will likely fall at areas over 12000’ elevation through the week. Great news for those ski areas already turning chairs for the season. Look for fresh snow at many western ski areas, including Loveland, Steamboat Springs, Sun Valley, and Jackson Hole.
