Balance and Coordination - Level 3

Written by Declan AJ Connolly.

Level three starts to integrate reaction speed and coordination. In this section we can use a soccer ball or sponge ball. You will work with a partner again. The purpose of this series of drills is to improve visual scanning and then require a reaction of varying speeds once the target has been identified.

Step 1: Have your partner stand about 6 feet away from you and facing you. Tell them to close their eyes and not to open them until you signal them to do so. Throw the ball gently and as you release it tell them to open their eyes, locate the ball and then catch it. You can vary the difficulty of this drill by delaying the command signal to open their eyes.

Step 2: Have your partner stand about 6 feet away from you facing away from you (see figure to the right). Tell your partner they may look to the side or up and down but NOT BACKWARDS. They can only move forwards or sideways to catch the ball and only when they see it. You will then toss the ball up in the air over their head. As you release the ball let your partner know by shouting "BALL". They must then locate the ball and move to catch it. Start the drill easy by throwing the ball high in the air which will give them ample time to locate it and then move. As they get better you can throw it lower which will require a faster reaction time. You can mix up the drill by using balls of different sizes.

Step 3: Assume the same set-up as in Step 1. This time your partner cannot open their eyes until they feel the ball touching their body. Remember to throw the ball gently. Even though you may only be using a sponge ball or soccer ball, it can be very intimidating, so go gently.
